Northern Green Rat

tbrock Jan 30, 2009 10:12 AM

I finally got a few pics of one of my new Hopkins Road locality triaspis - which were given to me by my good friend, Diego. This is the male, which is a very well acclimated w/c young adult. I'll get pics of the female soon.

Thanks again, Diego - these guys are awesome!

Yep - I really lucked out here. The female has some growing to do, but I'm hoping to breed them in 2010.

Thanks JY! Hey, I've always liked Black Rats, especially really dark black ones (morphs are cool too). Just as cool as Greens - only different.

blacks are cool...no sweat with them is all....but I am allowed just one and would be allowed only 2 if I would have gotten permits for them from before last year....and couldn't breed or sell them anyways......

we are allowed I am told to have "morph" natives and sell and all....haven't totally 100% proven that yet....they used to always let us alone with morphs....hets I am told are ok too but that is different matter to me...how can we prove they are hets ?....

...I have 2 black rats....sold the 4 licorices I had....too wierd...(healthwise).......the choclates are to be??? amel T pos and amel T neg crossed and maybe even white sides thrown in?...I forget...so I should get what he calls "Sunrise" and "Sunsets" at least........I am HOPING for ALL chocolate brown ones....that's what I like....(NOT like rusty colors)...

...good luck......blacks are cool..greens are cool......as are yellows, oranges, tans, greenish ,greys.////....LOL>...I like them all...but when I bred them all the kids ran like 5 bucks a pop so it got to be useless to breed them and I sold all the rats out...and kings and milks back then...all gone.....(kept corn then ball...now corns are worthless and balls are dropping like the economy.........!

Awesome Toby- he looks great. What are your cage temps if you don't mind me asking? Can't wait to see that female!

>>Awesome Toby- he looks great. What are your cage temps if you don't mind me asking? Can't wait to see that female!

Thanks! I am keeping them at the same temps I use for most of my ratsnakes, which is room temperature. This fluctuates, a little, from the low - high 70's F. I am currently not using any heat for them, and they do not seem to need it. According to a few sources, they are sensitive to temperature extremes, and need a heated area when brumated - where they will keep their heads warm. Possibly equally important as temperature, is having a well-ventilated cage with good hiding opportunities, and a hide with moist substrate, such as sphagnum moss.

Pics of the female coming in a few days, after she digests for a couple days.

Glad they are adjusting nicely, Toby. Acclimating them was really no problem, and they took off right away. The female actually grew quite a bit for me over the last year, so keep her going and you'll have a breeder next year for sure.

I take it she ate the live fuzzy? She'll take those every 1-2 days, if you offer them to her!

Hey Diego - I haven't given her the live one yet, but will feed her today. I wanted to give her a few days between trying with the f/t fuzzy and the live one, because she seemed really upset when I 'bothered' her with the f/t mouse.

If I'm going to feed her that often, she's gonna have to switch to f/t soon. I'm going to work on that for sure.

Well, I realize that I probably should, but I really hate the smell of mice in the house - I've tried it before. I might end up doing it anyway.

Great animals, Toby.
I thought Chiricahau Greens had the nicest shade of green, but I,ve changed my mind; those are the best. Keep us in mind when they have kids.....
