Rat racks

For those of you who build your own rack systems, do you still stick with sterilite tubs for your rats or do you use something harder so thay can't chew threw it?

Does any use sterilite for rats or do they tend to find a way to chew through them?

The concrete mixing tubs are durable and only cost 5 bucks. They seem to be the standard for rat racks from what Ive seen.
I think sterilite would be fine as long as there are smooth surfaces inside the tub so the rats can chew out.

It took my ASF rats 2 weeks to figure out how to chew through the flat surface of a sterilite tub. I tried 3 other tubs which they then chewed through in a matter of days. I may just have super chewers but I'm also an expert rat finder now.

One thing I've found however with ASFs is that they need mental stimulation. I keep my breeding colonies all in aquariums with wheels. They are obsessed with them. However, they don't chew. Not even on wood or their water bottles. They just run constantly!

My ASF rats have a wheel and some tubes to crawl thru and they still chew on everything. If the water bottle ever runs out for just a second then they destroy it.

At least they don't smell very much.

I hear you. The lack of smell is nice. I just wish the mice next to them smelled less.
