Ball python tub heating...

rdm01 Jan 30, 2009 01:02 PM

Hey gang!

I really appreciate the all the answers I've been getting here.

I'd like to setup a tub enclosure for my snake.
I'm curious if an under tank heater would melt the plastic underneith the tub.

Would a single heat pad be enough to heat up the tub to appropriate levels? I'd like to avoid a heat lamp on the tub if possible.

Thanks again!

As a temporary solution until i can get my rack...
i bought 5 15g sterilite tubs from walmart. i think they were like less than 5 bucks each. i also have small heating pads under them with enough substrate to regulate the temp. just make sure u dont spill water inside the tub cause it could cause tooo much humidity. it took me a couple days to get it right.

remember this is a temporary solution until my rack comes in with the thermostat...thats usually the best way to go. Boaphile has a 5 tub rack for about $340 assembled and with heat tape, just no thermostat, ohh and free shipping too. mine is on the way!!

good luck

You can use heat pads on a tub but I would highly recommend just ordering some heat tape. Heat tape is much cheaper and heating pads can get a lot hotter then you would like. If you go with a UTH pad I would still recommend you get a thermostat on each one because in a tub if it gets to hot your snake cooks, in a cage they have a lot more room to get away and cool off. I keep my snakes in a large display cage and I keep thermometers on 30-40 gal UTH all the time (One per cage). I have seen them go any where from 78-130 . In a tub this would be fatal but as I said this is a large cage and they just move to cool spots and are fine. With heat tape temps are much easier to control as well because they run on one circuit where each heat pad has its own.

I too am using uth's as a temperory setup until I get my rack. I only used the small ones (10-20 gal) to avoid a temp spike. I also raise the tubs a bit so they aren't sitting right on the heaters. This only works because my aprt is hot to begin with. (Gotta love being right above the boiler room.)
