Please help ID this snake

Lancecham Jan 31, 2009 11:54 AM

This snake was found in Los Angeles, California. It is about 13 inches and was found in a recently vacated apartment in a residential area. It is most likely someone's lost pet.
Can someone ID this snake?
Thanks for your help with this.

While that is a very common pet species, I would not rule out the possibility of it being wild because it is a California Kingsnake. It's not the typical color morph -- the naturally occurring members of this subspecies are generally banded instead of striped but they can show up like this in nature from time to time as well

Thanks,
I did look through many, many pictures of King snakes and most what I saw were banded ones. So I was a little confused. Thanks for identifying it. I have corns, boas and ball pythons, so snakes aren't new to me. But, generally, what is the temperament of King snakes?

Kingsnakes vary quite a bit. In general they are easy to tame and very aggressive feeders. Hatchlings can be pretty feisty and sometimes will strike at anything that enters their tank but again, they are easy to calm down.

Thanks again,
I have read several care sheets and actually found a picture very similar to the one I have. It appears to be a Newport-Long Beach phase.

Is this not a high white?

Sweet find. It's always great to find Kings. I've heard that Cal Kings can be nippy, but I've never experienced it. More than biting, I've had females musk all over me. If you can deal w/ an occasional musking, you're ready for Cal Kings.
