Most of the time when shipping next day air or overnight shipping, the package goes to the nearest biggest city or nearest major hub, which is usually in the biggest city near you, if you live in a good sized city then it usually goes from there to the major hub, for UPS that hub is in Louisville Kentucky, and for Fed Ex I believe its in Memphis Tennessee, from there it usually goes to the nearest major hub at the destination city, and then delivered to where it needs to go. Sometimes it can hit several city hubs, before it makes it to the final destination hub.
I generally check three temps, if I am shipping via UPS I check my local weather forcast, the forcast for Louisville Kentucky and then finally the destination temps...those three temps are the most important to me...
I know the midwest/east has had some bad storms, I would be cautious about shipping, but if you really have too, I would make sure you have a good insulated box and heat packs. Sometimes both parties can agree to wait, as often times its not worth the risk of shipping. I have shipped in temps of 40 but 50 is better, and those temps are hard to find this time of year. Anything below 40 is getting risky in my opinion...
Best of luck...I wish I could give you more info on exact hub stops...but I just know they all go through at least those big major hubs...louisville for UPS and Mephis for Fedex..I think thats correct..
