A few ???s about Gaboon Vipers...

BrandonSander Feb 01, 2009 02:38 PM

I would have posted this in the Viper sub-forum but it appears to be dead. AND I would have done a "Google" search but I wanted a little assistance pointing me in the right direction as far as finding reliable information.

Here goes:

1. What exactly is the difference between a Gaboon Viper and a Rhino Viper? Are they just different sub-species or localities? I know the Rhino has "horns" but beyond that I'm not seeing much of a difference.

2. I've seen posts and pics with both East African Gaboons and West African Gaboons. Are there any other localities known?

I don't keep hots, but I have nothing against those who do. If it weren't for my limited space and small children I would most likely pursue my interest a little bit more agressively, but I'm sure the wife would put a nix on that idea real quick. Right now I'm simply interested in learning more about Gaboon and Rhino vipers and any reliable information you people could point me to would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks!

Gaboon Vipers and Rhino Vipers are in the genus of Bitis along with several others (such as puff adders, all of the dwarf Bitis species etc. The Gaboon Vipers are split into two distinct subspecies (the east and western). The most notable difference in gaboons is looking at the facial stripes (2 in the eastern stripes vs. 1 stripe on the western), and east african gaboons tend to be lighter in coloration (as a trend).

Thanks, that was very helpful and at least gives me something to start with.

(Let me add to your post . ) As well as there scales , the Gabon has a smoother scale and the Rhino has a very keeled and uplifted scale . Both have horns on there nose but the Rhino‘s are more distinct . David
