Do gilas have to be registered?

gilabound Feb 01, 2009 03:06 PM

Hi I am new to the post. I recently came across a pair of breeder bandeds for sale that are fairly close geographically. I asked the guy selling and he seemed unaware of any registration as in the AZA. He said he bought them from another breeder. They look captive bred, but how does one prove it? I would like to purchase them, but it is a big investment and I don't want to be caught off guard. Any help would greatly appreciated.

No, Gilas and beaded lizards don't have to be registered. I've owned 2 gilas and 6 beadeds...only 2 have been aza registered. These days a receipt is enough to be legal. I'm sure a few wc animals have been brought into the hobby by shady characters...but heloderms are being captive bred successfully for many years now! A proven pair of gilas wouldkick butt. Check out Dr. Sewards book- It'll give you tips on incubation if you get them/have eggs... hatching the eggs seems to be the biggest hurdle a heloderm breeder faces...people sharing info/techniques has really helped advance captive breeding these days.

Sorry I wasn't much of a help!
