what all do ya'll feed??

CDP75 Feb 02, 2009 09:41 PM

I'm not sure how old Sydney is but she's 8 grams and about as long as a regular sharpie marker. I give her about 15 crickets a day spread out within 3-4 feedings. They are nicely gut loaded and I've been sprinkling some also....will be glad when she's big enough for me to use the shaker thingy. Right now they climb thru the bottom..hahaha. I also have some tiny pheonix worms on order.

I give her a salad everyday that she does eat now. She ate crickets only before and they had some kind of pellets in with her that didn't even looked touched.
Since I got her, the salad has mostly been collard greens with some squash. It did take a few day before she took interest it in. I've been reading online about veggies, greens and etc and many sites I have looked at all said something different.

This is always been a good info forum so I wanted to ask what all do ya'll feed and should I be introducing her to new greens/veggies this soon? Just like my tortoise, I want to make sure I provide her with a great diet and tired of rreading different things everywhere I look.

Feed as many crickets as he will eat at a 10 minute sitting 2-4 times a day. Make sure the crickets are no bigger than the space between its eyes. Crickets should be dusted with calcium with D3 and no phosphorus every feeding though one should also have a multivitamin mixed in,

At roughly 5-6" (don't have a regular sharpie pen on hand..but have a regular pen and I measure it at about 5 1/2" head to tail tip length, your dragon is probably about 6 weeks old or younger. Its hard to tell as older dragons can be that small if they have not been properly cared for before you bought him.

Ok thats what I'm doing with the crickets and have the multi vitamin and calcium powder. What about greens/veggies? That's where I was confused b/c websites say different stuff. Like one says to start now and one says to start later. She likes the salad I feed her now and was just looking for a variety that I could use for her salad.

I use the Dole spring mix for my beardie and he seems to like everything but some leaf that is red. I just usually don't put that in his dish because i can eat it when i have a salad. Really though I just say im going to eat a salad lol. For me I gave my beardie the option since he was very young. I hear stories both ways so I don't know and wont tell you what to do. As long as you keep away from the things that are bad for the beardies i feel you should be good to go.

It certainly doesn't hurt to have greens available all day even with very young dragons. Most people don't bother till they are older as often babies show no or little interest. However many will eat it between cricket feedings and even if they don't touch it..it provides food for any stray crickets that may still be in the cage, especially if the greens are left over night and changed in the morning.

Thus, keep with offering greens daily but baby dragons will need to eat about 80-90% of their daily food intake as insects. This percentage drops as they get older..till pretty much the opposite is true once they are full grown at roughly 14 months, when they will need to have 80-90% greens/veggies.

Spring mix is mostly lettuce which is mostly water and poor nutritional value. I start mine with mustard greens and dandelion. Collard greens are good but to heavy for a baby dragon in my opinion. Here's a good site with a nutrition chart.

Thanks everyone. She's eating plenty of crickets that she needs for a baby. She eats her salad in between and likes it. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing
