Red Spot King

Bluerosy Feb 02, 2009 11:06 PM

This is a hypo whitesided Florida king and it has a red spot. Does anyone know what this means??

I have 1.2 of these and only one has the red spot.

Ummmmm, erythricites hard at work.

That's been seen in other genetic quirks -- leucy Tx rats, anery Hondos, etc etc. No biggie. Nice snake tho.

That one scale is a trooper! He broke the mold, charts his own course. He doesn't stop for obstacles, he gets around them.

The cause for the appearance of the red pigment could very well be epigenetic -- for instance, a gene that codes for a protein that suppresses the production of red pigment could itself be suppressed by a non-genetic factor that is local only in that region of that one scale. This would lead to the production of the pigment, creating a red spot. Cool stuff to think about. On another level, I think the red freckle gives the snake more character . . .

This happens in leopard geckos as well concerning the blizzard patternless morph......these are referred to as "paradox spots".

Tim Ricks having adult breeders on display a few`years ago in Daytona. He had lavenders and I think whitesides that had patches of normal colored scales. I'd imagine what you have there is the same thing... just a normal colored scaled showing through. The scale is probably showing hypo, just not the whiteside. Whats interesting is that whitesides don't seem to have any red at all, like there's an anerythristic component to the trait.

The best examples of those hypo/whitesides will probably be close to solid white as adults. I imagine if it were combined with axanthic or anery you could get a leucistic looking brooks.

would this be the equivalent of a "paradox"? Or is that only associated with amelanism?

Looks like a damn maple leaf from canada! If you can breed that trait, I would call it the Canadian phase white sided brooks, and add about $10,000.00 to the price tag!

Great looking snake though!
