Serious question time - MITES

dekaybrown Feb 03, 2009 04:08 PM

I know I could troll through the threads, but my hands are shaking...

I just discovered MITES in about one third of the collection, Bleaching the heck out of tanks right now, spraying down the critters and fixing to buy about a hundred bucks in replacement bedding.

Can these "Snake Mites" infest my Sav?

Do these fraking parasites want my lizards too??

If so, what about his ear canals?

Chomper means the world to us, and I need to know STAT

Frank, Nice to see you around, missed you there for a while.

Thanks....

SNAKE MITES SUCK BALLS! From what I understand snakes only appeal to mites, but I have been wrong before. If you need something to look at as far as treatment Proexotics has a great section on snake mite treatment (I think that was where I read it).

Good Luck.

I take that back it looks like any reptile can get the mites. try to quarantine and clean clean clean, invest in some mite killer.

Doing just that.

And I am investing in some PAM (Prevent a mite) to keep the enclosures treated monthly.

We move a lot of animals in and out, as well as a couple that were seized from horrid conditions, so I cannot be too careful.

The damn mites killed a juvenile Garter that was het for anery, so I am a bit cheesed off.

By the way, Love that name Timmmmayyy (and the lords of the underworld)

The best cure for mites is not available now, and hasnt been for years. I still have some just in case (black knight roach spray). A good friend switched back to using "Sevin" years ago. He treated the snakes by bagging them with a bit of sevin and letting them crawl in it for a while, suddenly no mites.
I hate seeing reptile mites and having anybodies reptiles near mine after treating so many rescue animals years ago. Worse yet so many that came from petstores, and reptile wholesalers that were infested.

dekaybrown Feb 03, 2009 11:20 PM

Apparently the mites have not made it into Chompers enclosure.

Thank god he has a huge enclosure on the opposite side of the reptile room away from the snakes.

Probably a big part of the spread came from the fact that my snakes get fed outside the enclosures in poly boxes.

Shame on me for not hosing out the poly boxes between each snake rotation.

To prevent substrate from sticking to the food items, each snake is placed in a tote with food, then once the food is consumed, I place another snake in the box and repeat the procedure.

That way I can feed 6 snakes at a time.

Chomper either eats in his enclosure or on the floor of the reptile room.

Its a blast watching him chase those big Guyana roaches, I feed mostly frozen/thawed rats, but sometimes I let him slaughter a live mouse or two.

"No Pest Strips" I have found that those work the best. I have been using them for years and they are the only thing I have found to work.

varinus Feb 06, 2009 09:38 PM

Those pest strips are not good to use i forget the chemical it releases.

varanid Feb 04, 2009 10:22 AM

That's why I feed in cages. I know some people don't like it but all my snakes seem to do OK with it (no undue aggression or anything, no substrate ingestion). I figure the less cross contamination possible the better.

rappstar609 Feb 04, 2009 12:12 PM

TIMMAAAYYY and the lords of the underworld ha ha love it....

Anyway, from what I understand, mites are to snakes as fleas are to dogs... they don't really come from poor husbandry or conditions (although I'm sure it helps) but sometimes they just pop up, like fleas.

I feed my savs thawed mice, superworms and crickets occasionally (for the exercise to chase them)... The one time I introduced roaches they didn't know what to do with them! Of course eventually they ate them, but for the first few minutes they stared at the roaches with interest and followed them around until they taste tested them.

Mites do not just "pop up" like fleas, just as fleas dont just show up. Somthing brought them in or they were always there, period.

Mike.

monitorman29 Feb 04, 2009 08:27 PM

Rappstar, First you say that mites are only on snakes, now you are stating that mites dont come from lack or poor husbandry. Dont jump so fast to conclusions. Did you know that dogs can get mites?

rappstar609 Feb 04, 2009 08:51 PM

I guess I do own a 'jump, to conclusions door mat'... I read somewhere that 'reptile mites' are exclusive to reptiles, I think it was that same article that said mites can infest even the best kept enclosures/animals. Didn't mean they just appeared out of nowhere but that is how it sounded, my mistake.

I just inspected a female Garter that was brought to me for brumation and stud service.

She is clean, it also made sense that when she was brought here, I boxed her and proceeded directly to the basement.

I spent a good while yesterday cleaning the BP enclosure and treating him.

I have been told the stuff I am using is crap (Zoo Med) so I am picking up the 2 step program from LL.

Many of my snakes I cannot feed in enclosures, I house my garters in trios, and have seen fatal food fights and 2 cases of siblings swallowing each other, so I always separate garters for feeding time, to avoid the hassles.

It is mating season, and soon I will have a stack of 10 gallons with entire litters in them (again)

I still think I'm going to keep Chompers enclosure treated with PAM just to ensure no unwanted migrations occur.

Dont just pop up, they are the result of bad husbandry from the source of the reptile (distributer, petsore, etc). Good reptile businesses dont sell or distribute anything with mites or in the case of dogs, fleas.
Mites move from one animal to another in a collection.
Both are parasites that require a victim to attach to or they cannot survive and reproduce.

varinus Feb 06, 2009 09:36 PM

Talk to www.Pro-products.com and get provent a mite you dont need to go crazy and spend a ton of money. After using it youll never have them again.

dekaybrown Feb 07, 2009 01:03 AM

This actually turned into a good topic.

I know all about the mites, We were duped into purchasing a Puget Sound garter from the infamous WC "pro" and wound up at the vet within the first week.

His mites had gone unchecked for some time, and several of the bites had festered and filled with pus. So he had not only treatment, but meds as well. (So not good)

Nearly a year has past, the collection fills a reptile room, and we have been mite free for a long time.

Since they require a host, and I also have been known to pick up interesting snake specimens off the ground, and factor in the poor choice of using feed boxes without PAM to keep it all sterile, shame on me.

The storage closet in the rep room will always have a can or two handy, especially with spring around the corner, and the fact that I have a bad habit of picking up aberrant critters, it should have been there already with all the other stuff.

Now does anyone know if these bugs will go into a lizards ear canal?

And since we are on the subject, Chomp is a year old, and I am building him a rather large outdoor paddock so he can be a monitor this summer, Any prevention advice? We know he will be a digging mini excavator and I want to know if parasites are going to be a big issue, and what can I do to prevent infestations under those circumstances.

Thanks.
