New Beardie Help

Nave Sep 10, 2003 12:52 PM

Well I just got home from the post office from picking up my 2 new beardies. They are Super Orange x Citrus Sandfire morph. I added them with my old one right away. I dont think I should have done this but currently I only have one heat lamp so I didnt have much of a choice. The one I had before these 2 is a tad bit younger but no to big of a difference in size. But my first one is acting kinda weird now. it is alot more jumpy than it used to be and when I tried to pick it up it litterly rolled out of my hand. Roll over like a dog would. Other than that they seem to be getting along with each other. My first one is a Normal. He is also keeping his head down alot since then and not lifting it. his head is laying on the cage ground alot since I got them this morning.

Anways any advice or info on my beadies. why my first one is acting that way? should I hurry and get a new lamp and seperate them? any info greatly appreated.

The new dragons should have been kept separate from your old one for at least a couple of months, to make sure that they didn't/don't have any diseases that could be passed on to you other dragon. (Parasites, fungus, etc.)

And your old dragon is probably stressed and intimidated by having two new, unexpected cage-mates.

So the answer to your question is yes, get them separated as quickly as possible.

ok well I went to my friends house and forced him to sell me one of this leat lamps and I put my first one in a cage by himself.. I put crickets in there with him but when he runs after him or walks around he is wobbleing. Very shaky, makes it hard for him to get his food. Any idea of what could be wrong with him?

I'm a little confused here... You put your first dragon in a new cage, or back in his old one, alone?

If you put him in a new cage, and left the other two in the old one, then your first dragon is probably suffering from a good case of stress still.

If he's back in his first enclosure, then he probably just hasn't recovered from the shock of having the other two dropped in on him.

Either way, it'll probably take a while for him to recover, so keep an eye on him.

Also, make sure he wasn't injured while you were off getting a new light, since he could have been fighting, or simply have fallen or jumped wrong trying to get away from the others.

Be prepared to take him to a vet if he gets any worse, developes diarrhea, quits eating for more than a day or two, etc.

And it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get all three of them a fecal exam as well.

Well, that's all the advice I can give you. Others here may have more to add to it.

Hope it all works out for you.

ok here is what happened. I bought my first one about a week ago. When I first brought him home I put him in a 20 gallon tank. about 2 days ago I bought a huge rubermade container and set it up and put him in there. Today when I got home I put the 2 new ones in the rubermade thing with him. Then I took him out and put him back in the 20 gallon and let the 2 new ones have the rubermade because of size. After I put the first one alone then I went out and got a new heatlamp. so when I was gone he was still alone so the new ones couldnt have attacked him then.

Okay, it's probably just stress from all the changes...

He hasn't gotten time to settle good, and things get changed again. No wonder he's wobbly.

You really should have things already set up before you bring a new animal in. Have the tank or enclosure set up and ready to go so you can put the dragon in it, and let him get settled without any more changing and rearranging.

ok I'll keep him in the cage he is in but before to long I would have to switch him to a bigger cage so how long u think it should be before I do that?

DraconisAntiquus Sep 10, 2003 07:26 PM

I would say give it a couple of weeks to adjust before you change things again.
At very least, make sure it's healthy and well-settled, and that the new enclosure is completely set up when you move him in.

All new reptiles are recommended to be placed under quarantine for a period of several months. Maybe put the new dragons tank in the same room as your other dragon so they can get used to each other.
Your old dragon thought he was "King of the Hill" but now there are 2 new roommates suddenly dropped into his house!
After several months of them being separate, I would introduce them slowly. They will have to establish a dominance order and there may be some beards flaring or hissing or nipping/biting going on during that time. Keep them under a close eye during that time.
For now, the new dragons should have already had their own set-up in place. Lights, basking logs, food dishes, substrate & enclosures all need time and thought and $$ put into them in advance so the dragons transition into your care is smooth and without stress on your dragons. Get them there own set-up today before they get into a ruckus and to be sure they are healthy so you don't risk the well-being of your old dragon.

Good Luck!

Thx for ur help DA and Sharla, really help. I think he is starting to get better already he seems alot more active over the past hour.

Sharla Sep 10, 2003 08:55 PM

Yeah....I'd get kinda flipped out if 2 strangers moved into my house unannounced, too!
Give them some time, undisturbed and they'll come around
Good Luck!
