Co-habitation?

evers310 Sep 10, 2003 01:00 PM

Will a (Female?) midland water snake and a (female?) king snake co-habitate? They are close to the same size, the king is a bit bigger [14"] than the midland [10"].

Also, What specific type if king is it? It is black with bright lime yellow/green markings.

Thanks!

One of the most well known aspects of Kingsnake (L. getula) biology is that they routinely prey on other snakes, even venomous species. This is how they earned the title "Kingsnake". I would bet your 14" Kingsnake would quickly turn your 10" Nerodia into a meal if they were placed in the same enclosure. For the sake of that pretty little Midland, keep them very much apart.

Post a pic of your King or give a much more detailed description and I'd be happy to ID it for you.

It didn't come up for me originally. That looks like an Eastern Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula getula). Very nice. Did you catch him too?

Sure did. He was literally 10 seconds away from being road kill. He's a great snake!

I aggree with pierson. It is an eastern king and never put a king with another snake not even another king of the same species unless your attempting to breed them. Even then you need to keep close eye on them or one may turn up injured eaten or both will becom injures or eaten.
Oh by the way I went to cosumel and playa del carmen, mexico just the week before last. I saw no snakes but caught a beutiful rock iguana. The little mexican park ranger dude saw me and started walking towards me so I got my aunt to take 3 pics of me and it, then i let it go. I just had to mention this. It was the most exciting thing that I have ever done. This was my 1st time out of the country so i'm still a littel excited and i have to blabber on on some forum I regularly post on so there I blabbered on.
I still have found no gravid female midland and i'm begining to get upset. I have not even seen one wild snake since that cotton mouth in the erlier post.
