Night Drop or No Night Drop

Omnivorous Feb 04, 2009 01:05 AM

I was wondering how many of you use a Night Drop for your temperature/thermostats? I figure its more like how nature is but after reading Ron Tempers book he says he keeps his at 88 or 89 whatever the setting was for 24 hours a day 365 days a week. He doesnt explain why. Not sure if its because he uses racks. Trying to figure out if theres a good reason for that. Is useing a night drop harmfull? I am useing a night drop of about 7 degrees at night currently.

Night drops are fine and are natural. I personally don't intentionally use them. I use undertank heating and they are on all the time, all year long.

RT probably keeps his on 24/7 365 so his geckos metabolize, digest, and grow quicker. Plus it's no secret that geckos that are habitually exposed to higher temps will have brighter colors.

I'm sure my temps drop slightly at night (1-2 F) because less heat is being emitted via light bulbs in the herp room.

It really doesn't matter unless your goal is to raise geckos to sexual maturity as fast as possible....both methods have proved successful.

I also leave my warm end of the tank at, what Tremper does, and always have. Just make sure you have a warm end of the tank and a cool end of the tank, so the gecko can thermoregulate it's own body temperature. The gecko will decide what it needs heat wise at any given time.
