Brooks!

Having Just purchased a brooks kingsnake i couldnt wait to get him home once in his tank with heat mat set up and hide in place he had seemed to settle in until i went to get hold of him and he struck out at me is this common with kings and will it hurt if he catches me? he is approx 6 mnths old.

Yeah, young kingsnakes are somewhat notorious for being nippy when they are young. Especially when they are stressed out from switching to a new enclosure.

With regular handling it should "tame" down quickly. Just remember to wash your hands after handling mice.

It might startle you, but at 6 months old, I don't even think it would be capable of even drawing blood.

agreed. Leave him be for a day or two, then handle him daily for a while. My Brooks are the most docile snakes I own, however, make sure you look out for their aggressive feeding response. Once they know a routine, they'll be looking for that lid to come off and sometimes they'll greet you at the top of the cage expecting food. What I do is to reach in behind them quickly and confidently, while I always present food from directly in front. Again, you'll get a routine going. Congrats on the Brooks. I love them
