They usually do not come and inspect unless you have a commercial permit or complaints against you for having species that are not allowed or are not on your permit.

I have a Dealer's Permit, and I've been inspected on two occasions.
It was quick and painless, and the folks who came to my home were educated and cordial.

In both instances, they scheduled their visits with me. However by agreeing to the terms of the permit, (Hobbyist, Dealer,or Wholesaler) you are granting permission to the state to have your home inspected at any time.

I have a pair breeding right now and I was planning to sell some of the babies. I still need to get the dealer permit, however I'm not supposed to have pets in my apartment building. I don't want to get kicked out of my apartment but I also don't want to be selling snakes illegally. What do you think I should do?

If you sell them out of state you do not need a dealers permit, only if you sell them in NJ.

we were inspected last summer. the lady was very pleasant, scheduled her date and then even rescheduled when i needed ACL surgery. very painless and easy to pass. one of the comments she made was how clean our room weas and how there was very little smell compaired to what she is used to with other breeders. i believe she was pretty impressed. keep a clean snake room and there will be no issues

From my understanding of the legislation in NJ, if you own a reptile in NJ, you must have a "Hobbyist Permit".

If you decide to buy/sell/breed reptiles in the state of NJ, you must have an "Animal Dealer Permit". This permit DOES NOT allow you to sell reptiles WITHIN NJ, it ONLY allows you to sell beyond state lines. This permit costs $100.00 annually, and it is rewarded upon a "succesful" inspection of your "facility". A very simple process.

Lastly, if you decide to buy/sell/breed reptiles WITHIN the state of NJ, you must have an " Animal Dealer Permit" AND a "Pet Store Permit". Each permit will cost you $100.00, ($200.00 Total per year) and again, an onsite inspection would be required. With both permits however, (you can purchase a "Dealers Permit" without a "Pet Store Permit", but you CAN NOT purchase a "Pet Store Permit" without a "Dealers" permit) you can safely sell both inside, and beyond NJ state lines.

So the question is this: If you only have a few animals, and you are very "low key", and you don't advertise on-line, should you bother to get a hobbyist permit? My suggestion is that you do. Why? Because it's only $10.00 per year, and in the event your animal escapes, (this should never happen) or any unplanned event occurs with your reptile, and either a neighbor/landlord/relative calls the police or ASPCA out of fear, then at least you have your proper permit in place. You can now avoid any fines and/or penalties. Also, without having minimally a "Hobbyist Permit", you're leaving yourself wide open for possible confiscation of your animals as well as your equipment. This would be an extreme measure taken by the state, and my intention is not to scare anyone, but why take a chance on losing a beloved herp because you failed to pay a $10.00 permit fee? It can absolutely happen.

thanks for your help. i just got my permit a few days ago but the thing is i put my house address so they would send me the permit but i actually keep my pets at my shop which is 10 miles from my home in nj. just hope thats ok if they ever want to come an inspect? other wise 100% worth having the permit just in case anything does happen like inspectors that come and check my shop every now and than for any building violations. thank gary and everyone else.
