The unseen working part of the vivarium

JohnStyner Sep 10, 2003 01:27 PM

Two 55w 5300K Compact flourescents for the plants. to thrive. These guys are really bright.

One 250w ceramic heater with a small computer fan blowing over it into the tank and one 150w ceramic heater. I use these for heat instead of other bulbs like halogens because I don't like the orange light incandescents make. This leaves all of the light nice and white like daylight which shows off the colors of the lizards more accuratly and vivid. Also good for photography.

Both of the ceramic heaters are connected to a helix proportional thermostat.

One glass of milk.

One 60w mercury vapor with external ballast. This one from Active uvheat has a very nice white light very close to the 5300k of the compact florescents. I recently installed another fixture that I will put the old one year old merc vapor uvb bulb in when I replace it since it has lost its uvb power but since I think it still has some left I will have it supplement the new one and have 2 going at the same time.

The oak hood sheilds the viewer from the light and the tank is set high at eye level so you can look in without stooping down. Every thing sits on a 1 inch aluminum grid which keeps away all of the glare even when sitting down in the living room so you are not blinded by the bulbs.

For those of you possibly looking to match my desription with the pic I have a correction on the second used merc vapor. I will replace the 150w ceramic heater with the used Merc vapor and disconnect that fixture from the thermostat when that time comes. I have another external ballast waiting in the wings.

Might as well get it right since I am going into this much detail.

Oh, and thats a guitar tuner next to the glass of milk

How can you fit all of that on the top of the tank? How big is the tank? I don't know if I could do something like that, knowing me I'd start ;a fire or blow a fuse! LOL I am very impressed by your set up, and the fact that you drink milk, I hope it is cow's milk and not soy milk. (My B.S. is in Dairy Production!)

the milkglass is about 10 ounces.
I'm not an electrician but I do alright as my house hardly ever gets an electrical fire. LOL

Thanks to everyone for the compliments on my tank
