Keep feeders and food in same freezer?

tomsey Feb 06, 2009 09:56 PM

Just wondering what your thoughts/experience/opinions are on keeping frozen feeders in the kitchen freezer next to your food.

Is their a safety issue here?

If I keep the frozen rodents in plastic containers in the freezer, will this prevent any odors or contaminents from mixing with MY food in the freezer?

Thanks for any help.

I did for years but now I have a separate upright freezer.

As the deep freeze was sub zero and the animals were packaged, I didn't see a problem. Obviously loose frozen rodents wouldn't be ideal. Any one visiting your freezer would think it odd as well.

The main issue for me was space, frozen feeders really cut down on the space for frozen pizza!

I really prefer the upright freezer shelves are far more space efficient with different size rats.

Cheers.

LOL, not in my house, wifey is VERY supportive in my hobby but that is a line she drew that I would not care to cross!!!

Not too thrilled about it myself. So, I bought a small freezer just for the rats.

i have a seperate freezer , you know how those grocery store chickens etc....are notoriously prone to have Salmonella etc.

There isn't any problems at all. If the rats and chicken breasts were in physical contact without any plastic between them..maybe.

To be honest, I doubt there isn't anything on the rats or mice frozen in the freezer that would be harmful, as long as food for human consumption is cooked as appropriate. But for comfort sake, keep your rats/mice wrapped and the human food wrapped too. If your power goes out and everything thaws..toss everything.

It is illegal to keep frozen rodents in the same freezer as food, as I discovered last year. I do NOT know how, but even when both (food and rodents) are securely (and separately) wrapped the rodents WILL contaminate the food. I do not understand how this could be true, but it is true.

Last year I was told that if I had any rodents in my freezer, that I would be arrested. Or at the very least, cited by the health department.

The department of health varies state to state so your laws maybe different, board of health is nation wide but I doubt they have an issue.

In reality I have a hard time believing storing frozen feeders in the freezer is any different than frozen fish food, or wild game. It maybe a poor practice depending on the situation but I doubt it is a single offense convictable charge.

When frozen chicken must be handled carefully to protect against salmenella or ground beef with ecoli. Frozen seperatly packaged rodents are just unappealing to some...

If you can cite a paragraph or century code in public law that specifically applies it would be helpful. Whenever I'm approched by Law enforcement of any kind I ask to be shown or given the reference, how else am I to defend myself...you would be suprised how often just asking gets you out of the ticket...

Cheers
