Croc Monitor Size...

august9 Feb 07, 2009 03:52 PM

Does anyone have a croc monitor over 8' in length? I have read that they are supposedly the longest monitor in the world, but I have never seen any longer than 8'. Do you know why people believe the croc monitor is the longest lizard?

How would you rank the croc monitor in size compared to other monitors?

Thank you.

[Do you know why people believe the croc monitor is the longest lizard?]

It's a tall tale. I mean, it's a long tail

The tail is very, very, very long (arboreal species)and the Croc monitor can grow quite large, so they can exceed the Komodo Dragon in actual lenghth, but would weigh a fraction of the Dragon's weight.

But, back to the 'tall tale', I think it's actually V.Salvator, rather than Salvadori, that holds the record for 'longest' monitor.
Though, I'm just repeating what I heard on another forum, by a very knowledgeable breeder/keeper in OZ

If you are going by authentic record sizes, then salvadorii are the third longest lizard in the world, following after V. salvator then V. komodoensis. At least I think that's how it goes...I'm not particularly well read on the indo species.

Komodoensis is the heaviest and most impressive of them though.

Monitor.
The V. salvator that holds the longest lizard record was 10ft 4 inches, the record for a much bigger heavier komodo was one inch shorter in length. I dont think anyone has officially measured any crocs (V. salvadori) accurately longer than 8ft and some inches.
