bad shed disorder?

nate351 Feb 07, 2009 06:18 PM

Is anyone aware of a disease or disorder which causes repeated failure to shed and eventual bacterial or fungal infections in/on the multiple layers of retained skin? It seems over the years I have seen a few babies and juveniles for whom this seems to be the case, and now I am faced with a large adult with the same problem. I don't believe that basic husbandry issues are the problem as that is always the first thing I check and dial in, and I am experienced in keeping/breeding them.

Basically what I have seen is that sheds either stick on, or seem to come off 1.5 layers at a time after a few layers have built up. The scales always appear and feel somewhat rough with more of a matte finish rather than the gloss of healthy scales. Again, humidity, temperatures, cleanliness, and the like are correct.

thanks,
nate.

I don't understand why you are allowing the shed layers to build-up. If a Boa has any retained shed left on, then you need to remove it if they don't do it themselves within a day or two. Letting them climb in a tub of wram, wet towels is one of many ways. Unless there's some kind of dermal issues happening, the best ways to ensure good sheds is plenty of humidity. I liberaly spray my cages with warm water 3 times a week, and daily if they're opaque. Perfect sheds every time for the last few years.
