I know this isnt the Feeder Food Forum but I figured I would ask in here.

My question is how old do ASF rats have to be to breed?

Is there a down side to feeding ASF rats to your balls?

My first pair of ASFs did not breed until they were about 7 months old. Actually, I bought a new male & put it in with them & that is what got mine started.

The downside is that your snakes may decide to eat only ASFs, and you will need to keep them on hand. They bite like holy hell (especially moms)...plan on bleeding. I'll take a bp bite ANY day rather than one from an ASF, lmao!

Well I have about 20 females and 5 males right now all seperate blood lines. They were born around early december through early Jan. They are about the size of a an adult mouse maybe a little bigger. The males are seperate from females and they are very handable. When should I introduce the males to the females.

Usually around 3-4 months they will start breeding some a bit earlier some a bit later.

One more thing -- once they are weaned you can go ahead and set them up in their colony and just let nature take it's course. They'll breed when they are ready.

I'd get them together as soon as possible. Younger animals are more likely to accept the introduction of a stranger. ASFRs sometimes kill a newly introduced potential mate.

I breed my colonies for 6 months then kill them all off...

7 months?...wow.....

Maybe you can come over for dinner one nite, bring some emu or ostrich meat & we'll chow down. I like tamarind sauce on everything! Afterwards you can help improve my rodent colony.

never ate tamarind sauce....did drink a tamarindo soda from the vender at work....not that good...but I don't really prefer carbonated beverages....(NO I never drank beer either in case it crossed your mind)LOL.....

don't actually have connections for emu or ostrich anymore...market crashed and I think they finally bailed out...you could get an adult emu for $60...why bother......

not sure bison price either anymore....used to get it for $3 burger and $7 steak/roasts....must have been awhile...hmmm...

Just curious JY, why do you kill your colony off after that time?

have to rotate stock....make as many babies as fast as possible....some go for maybe?...let's say 8 months if you like...or even a year.....I treat them like stock not pets....I kill everything off at 6 months of BREEDING not age....rat,mouse,hamsters,gerbils,ASF...not roborovski hamsters , they take 4 months to start....

...if they are fine and giving alot of kids...let them be...if they stutter in production and you have the new breeders awaiting...I kill off....

also there is always a need for large ASF (and all other rodents except rats ) here.....so I need to use large adult asf too...

or maybe one or more had troubles....so the rest just get killed off....oops on them....maybe one girl died in giving birth...

you cannot add new females or males to a colony of anything almost unless you are lucky or do it correctly....ASF would kill the new one....
