Its snowtime, little "afternoon delight"

boxienuts Feb 08, 2009 06:28 PM

The snows don't waste any time, as soon as I put Coverdale in her tub, Ruby was shaking her baby maker, tail went strait up in the air. Since that photo she has been sucking down jumbo mice like a pregnant woman gorging on pickles and ice cream.

Hey Jeff, hows it going
Nice snows! Are those the parents to that little cream colored one you had born last season?

Jeff,

Great shot, thanks for sharing.

Luckily they sat still for that photo, I was glad Ruby is so calm dispositioned, didn't want her dragging Coverdale around the tub by his wanky, that could do some permenant damage one would think. Of course my wife has been doing that since we got married and I'm OK......I think, lol.

Hey Dan,
I'm doing OK, hope you and your family are well. I'm glad my wife and I still have a day jobs with all the lay-offs in the news locally, but we have a hiring freeze here so very short staffed and working lots of hours, hope I dont end up having to sell snakes off to put food on the table, although that wouldn't be half bad way to make a living either.
Are you still burried in snow out in your part of the country? We thawed out last week but more snow in the forcast of course.
Anyway sorry to babble, those are the parent pair, however the cream is not so little anymore she is 350grams now, and putting weight on fast again, she also has been breeding with her dad and sibling male, I know it sounds gross, but I need to see if anything is repeatable, she still has increadible glass eyes that you can see into her head and her sheds are still very yellow, but overall she looks like a snow. With a little luck she and her sister that i held back will produce babies this spring as well.
Wish them and me a little luck aay? and best of luck to you with the field herping this spring.

We havnt had snow for a couple weeks, but I'm sure we'll be getting more soon. Its actually been pretty nice here, in the upper 40s & 50s.

Good luck with all your projects this year!

Well, My garters have been up for a little while and so far I have seen a LOT of action between my male eastern and my hypo female, but no copulation that I've SEEN (I am not home all day). Everyone else has been off and on courtship, some of the females still need to shed!

boxienuts Feb 12, 2009 12:40 PM

My experience has been that, after that first shed after winter put the male in right away and leave her shed in the tub, I have seen my males sniffing and tasting that shed and then get all love crazy immediately and then track and chase her down and get busy. I think between the shed and the females new skin, lots of pheromones are present and also laid down on the bedding. And I definately don't and wouldn't clean out the cage for awhile after the shed and during breeding weeks, so I think it's a good to clean the cage real good when you see them blue to prepare. That's just how I roll, maybe that will be helpful to you and others or maybe people have other ideas and oppinions.

Actually, I feel the same about this shed. Only the craziest of males usually court the females before their shed, and even then it's often subdued. I feel that this shed is very important in the breeding cycle and that right after this shed is the key time to introduce the male and female together. My female marcianus just shed, the male is in deep blue right now so I do not think he has noticed, he's hiding a lot because of his own shed. I think as soon as he sheds he will make like my male eastern and start courting nonstop. My male eastern and my hypo female went into shed at the same exact time, they did not start courting until they both shed... right after that all hell broke loose!! I house my pairs together. Next year I am going to bring my males up a week earlier than my females!

boxienuts Feb 13, 2009 10:58 AM

yeah, I had 8 females shed last weekend within a day or two of each other and most of the males did as well. I don't know if it was just the fact that I warmed them up togather about 2 weeks ago or if the approaching full moon had something to do with it.

Jeff, I had wanted to mate my Puget, but as it turns out, the nice man I got my ladies from sent me 2 blue Ordinoides (Not his fault, he purchased a gravid female from "Bob" and assumed she was a Puget.)

About the only hopeful breeding this spring will be flames.

My male is in shed right now, and I just brought the females out of the basement yesterday.

As soon as he sloughs, I'll give it a go.
