Caging, ad nauseum

TexIndigo Gal Sep 10, 2003 03:52 PM

Has anyone looked at the PVC cages for sale on the classifieds? Are there any inherent problems with PVC as a cage material?

We are on the brink of investing in cages to house our animals identically, for ease of maintenance and security's sake. I can't see putting expensive animals into makeshift housing that might cause illness or injury or risk of loss. Stacking containers that have to be moved every time an animal must be dealt with are for the birds, or at least someone more patient than I am.

I'm not really sure about the potential problems associated w/ PVC caging. I believe all plastics have a certain amount of offgassing but I'm not sure if expanded PVC is any more harmful than the other plastics.
I recently purchased some Boaphile cages which I really like a lot. (better than my Visions or Neodeshas). I got them with fluorescent lighting and heat installed. I believe the Boaphiles are made from an expanded PVC plastic.
I saw the ad for the cages that you were looking at. It seems like it would be very easy for a strong Drymarchon to escape from them. It looks like the doors are only held shut in the middle which would make either side very easy to push out.
Some cages that have plexi-glass / acrylic doors use really thin plexiglass that can easily be pushed out by a strong snake to create a gap. I can't even use my Neodeshas with plexi-glass doors for my cribos because they can push the door out and escape.

So far, Boaphiles and Visions are my favorites for Drys (Although Vision's textured surfaces are kind of a pain in the butt to clean....especially with Drys.)
