HOGG ISLAND BOAS? A go or a no?

dahlallotus Feb 10, 2009 11:15 AM

This is my first time posting here! Although I browse Kingsnake.com a lot!

There is someone local with an add for baby Hogg Islands available for $100 each. Is this something to consider at this price and as a first time boa? (I've kept reptiles for 15 years and have other snakes, just never a boa) Is it really that rare of a boa? I keep reading that it is because it is assumed extinct in the wild? But then why would someone sell them for $100. Yet I don't see them available or bred on any sites that come up. What do you think.

They are really pretty, grey motley, pale. Not the bright cross-breed morphs people are blurring into Hoggs.

I am a ball/royal girl. If I do buy one of these Hoggs, I'd get a male and a female to possibly breed. But I could easily put $200 toward a ball morph instead.

I've stalled for five days and the lady wants to know tomorrow if I'm coming to take a couple or not. Just curious on the 411 of Hogg Island's in terms of supply, demand, rareity, and herp community interest.

Thanks so much!

If you like em get em!!! Working with animals you want to work with as always more rewarding. You will not get rich breeding them but there is now and will continue to be a market for quality specimens.

Thanks, Dave. I'm not looking to be a breeder, I have a bit too much of that with my own juvenile humans, lol, aka "Larry, Moe, and Curly". I am just a smitten hobbiest and my career and family keeps me too busy to want to turn my hobby into a business. I've wanted to try breeding just for the reward and delight of doing so, but do not really know much about this subspecies and curious if I did enjoy breeding and were to sell a few if I'd even be able to.

THOSE HOGGS LOOK PRETTY DECENT LOOKING...SO $100 IS A GOOD PRICE....GO FOR IT.....JC

Go for it, get them! Get the nicest looking specimens in the bunch and whether you breed them or not at the very least, you'll have some beautiful snakes.
Good luck.

Typically selling a few is fairly easy with approprite prices, it's always the last couple that are the hardest to sell.....

Like I said there is a market and if you like them, go for it!!!!

I got one! Decided just to get one, I can always get another down the road. Very friendly little one and they said a good eater. I plan to get it sexed though this weekend. The owners didn't know gender. Thanks for all your feedback! It's exciting to have added a boa to my herp collection.

no pics of your new little one.....very dissapointing!!

Here's a link to a sexing by palpation post I put up earlier this month. I know you only have one but if it's a male you might just find the bb's!!!

After probing boas for years I finally learned how to sex them that way last year and it's amazing how easy it is once you get the hang of it.
As far as the hog islands go, great choice. Their great boas and they sell well.
