Bearded Dragon itching eye?

BCRHerps Feb 10, 2009 01:05 PM

My Beardie keeps itching her eye but only when I put her in the bathtub? and she bobs her head up and down and waves her legs all around

but again only in the bathtub? any idea why? I figured it was just because she doesn't like the bathtub but I figured I'd ask

what do you mean by itching her eye? Is she scratching her eye with her claws, rubbing it against the side of the tub?

It is possible fumes from chlorine in the water could be irritating her eyes, or she got water in her eyes. As for the head bobbing and arm waving...sounds like she isn't sure if she should dominate or submit to the water.

Dragon baths should be 80-85 degrees. That feels slightly cool to us. Too hot and they try like heck to jump out. The rubbing her eye sounds more like a retained shed issue?

Is this what she is doing? Check out this video and watch the dragon on the bottom left at about 11 seconds in. He just did it for a second, but it made me think of this post as I was watching....

Itching with her claws which I'd think would hurt and I check her eyes and they look fine afterward

That's exactly what she is doing like if only that dragon was tanner xD

constantly scratching her eye with her foot usually indicates something is irritating her eye, eye lid or area around the eye. If it only happens in the bath, could be water getting into her eyes and irritating it.

It is always possible she does scratch in her cage but you just don't see it. When giving a bath we tend to watch far more closely than just observing in the cage once in awhile.

Check her eye closely, use a magnifying glass if you have one for any signs of infection, something in the eye, redness or swelling. If you find any of these, take him to a vet so they can determine what is causing it.

If there is nothing you can see and after watching him in the cage more often, and he doesn't scratch at all, I would check water temperature, be careful he doesn't splash water in his eyes or make sure there are no strong chemicals or fumes (including scents from soap, bath oils, etc that may have been in the sink before you give the bath).
