Breeding question

boxienuts Feb 11, 2009 12:31 PM

This is a question for the breeders out there. Do most of you find that once the female cornsnake has been bred that the male will have completely no interest in breeding her anymore, or do they usually breed over a period of several weeks, or months?

The typical way to breed a pair is to leave them in the cage together for 3 day periods. They will breed a couple times during that period. Then you give the male a 2-3 day rest and re-introduce them. Some people do it for a week at a time with breaks in between. Most people keep it up until they know the female is gravid or until they have seen a lock up for sure.

Now, I am not speaking for everyone and some people may do things a little different.
Hope this helps

A male corn will usually repeatedly breed with a female for a few weeks. They generally do not cease being interested in a female, even if a previous mating during the same breeding season was successful.

Hey Tim, is that a creamsicle? She is very pretty. What a beautiful sight, Nice big fertile eggs. I can't wait to see that over and over again this spring. It never gets old.

Misty,

Yes, that's a creamsicle. It's hard to believe that eggs that big came out of that snake.
I'm looking forward to warming snakes up in a few days and getting the breeding season underway.

Thanks for the replies guys, the reason I ask is that when I first put my male in with the two different females on the first occation with either female he went right after it, with both male and female snakes twiching and then locked up, but then the last couple times that I have put him with either of them he seems uninterested. It seems like last year they bred several times over several weeks. I'm thinking I should probably keep putting him in anyway, just in case? I have been doing the couple days in, couple days off thing.
