BREEDING QUESTIONS

sallie_keeper Sep 10, 2003 05:34 PM

I hope to try my hand at breeding leos.. I have a very large(6" nose to tail), high-yellow female that I want to find an equally nice male for, but I have a few questions before I start...

1. if I breed a giant to a normal size, will the babies be average sized as well, or will they take on mother's size, or something in between??

2. Do leopard geckos breed year round?? Am I going to get eggs all the time or seasonal??

3. Is constant breeding hard on the female?? She is a pet.. and do not wish to endanger her health. I can separate the pair and only put together during the normal breeding season..

Please tell me what you think..

1. Tremper (to the best of my memory) told me that a baby is either giant or not, it cannot be het. It is harder to tell the difference until they age a bit, as they do, the giant has a more torpedo like in appearance, the tail will be longer, and it will be large for its age.

2.) Yes, some will breed all year, some do not. Your third question answered your #2 question. It is hard on a female to breed too frequently. Not just the egg laying either, but being pestered by the male is stressfull. Not to mention the male may end up with more on his mind than food and begin to lose weight. It is actually best for both animals to be separated when not breeding.

I'm sure others will have a lot more to say.
Hope this helps some.

Take care,
Laura

6"? looks a bit bigger in the pic... but i can't tell its small. but if it is 6", its actually rather small, depending on its age. it's not big enough to breed, it will probably get about 8" .

your head will collapse, but there's nothing in it, and you'll ask yourself, "where is my mind"

And when looking for a really nice selection of BEAUTIFUL high yellows, Marcia (goldengategeckos), has nice ones. Saw them all last weekend. She's even got a few that will be old enough to breed early next season!

I think I said it wrong, my female is 6" nose to vent, and 9 total... A couple months ago, she layed 4 large eggs, but unfertile of course...

I need to learn how to scan pics better...
