HELP! My first beardie problems....

ooanwfndglryoo Sep 10, 2003 05:37 PM

Hi guys and gals! I posted a couple nights ago about my new addition to the family...My first and only beardie so far =). I am starting to worry about her....She is 2 1/2 months old and she is acting very weird since I put her in her new tank. She won't eat very much and doesn't seem like she ever wants to come off of her basking log.....Today I took her off of her basking log and put her on the bottom of the tank, I then took her log completely out of the tank. She started running at the wall and jumping up then she would just sit in one spot against the glass. I don't know what I'm doing wrong... I'm kind of upset because I want her to be O.K. but she just isn't coming aroud. If anyone has some suggestions that would be great.

By the way my setup for now is a 55 gallon tank, twist UVA/UVB bulb (for now till I get my 48" reptisun 5), 100 watt heat lamp, log under heatlamp and twist bulb for basking and a small water dish on the cool side of the tank....I also have 2 digital thermometers with probes in the tank and temps are good. Her stools look totally normal.

Thanks alot!
-Justin

I don't think there's anything wrong with basking all the time. Are you sure your temps are warm enough? A 100 watt bulb and a twist on flourescent doesn't generate alot of heat. It just sounds like she's trying to stay warm. Perhaps you can section off a part of the tank to make it smaller. Make sure your basking site is about 110 degrees.

Also, the 100 watt bulb and the coil bulb should be in the same area. The coil bulb barely give off any uvb, so the closer she is to it, the better.

Sounds like she is fine to me. You need to worry when they don't bother to get up to go to the basking log. They sometimes take a while to get eating full force due to stresses of getting a new home. As long as she is eating, & pooping (with normal poos) I wouldn't worry too much. Dragons naturally don't do a whole lot anyway.

I wouldn't remove the basking log, you are just creating more stress for her.

She will come around.

The beardie turns it's entire underside blackish...well like white with blackish lines going all through it?

If you're talking about the whole underside of the mouth area, this is the "beard"

Dragons inflate this and turn it black when they're upset and want to be intimidating.

I am talking about his ENTIRE underside

Generally, that means that the dragon is cold. Watch when he heats back up and it will go back to the original color.

And like Joel said, keep the log in there for her. Just make sure you watch your temp...What are your temps anyways?

Good luck...
