OK to breed siblings?

jsschrei Feb 11, 2009 09:00 PM

This sounds like such a dumb question to me. But, I have noticed that many of the boas for sale are as pairs, and that sometimes the pair are siblings. Are there many problems in boas doing that? I am newer to boas. I have lots of ball pythons and there are some morphs that have genetic problems and outcrossing helps a great deal.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my question.

For line breeding it is often unavoidable when trying to pass certain traits on. I think it can safely be done for a couple of generations, but that is an opinion only.

If I buy pairs of siblings I normally have plans to breed them to different blood unless there is something special that I would like to bring out.

I think that it is done more often than most of us realize, so if you were to purchase a sibling pair I would always ask if the parents were sibs as well.

Absolutely agreed. I just do the same in my collection.

All the best,
Adam

That is what I thought, but always better to be informed than to make uniformed errors!
Thanks!

I appreciated this question, wondered about that, too. Great replies.
