Spur close up/follow up - tail pictures

AbsoluteApril Feb 12, 2009 11:21 AM

Update from my post a little down the page, Spur close up - Male or Female?

Cinnamon’s tail, here’s the underside shots. Vent is right before the large red circle marking on the tail.

Here’s a shot from the top:

And here's the pic of the spur:

Male or Female, what's your opinion?

Thanks again for the help guys!

By looking at the pics, I would say male. The tail doesn't tapper down real fast after the vent, and the spurs would be pretty big for a female. Why not just have it probed? I would be shocked if its a female though.

I did try probing but didn't have any luck, probe went in 2 subcaudal scales but the snake had the tail muslces tensed up and I didn't trust that reading.

Thanks for the opinion!

Looks more fem than male to me. Although it certainly is a
non dimorphic tail.

Hey Lar, I agree. I can see it going both ways and would believe both male or female for this snake.

I'll probably just end up putting Cinn in with a known male and female next year and see what happens. Of course I've had two females court each other before so that still might not give me an answer! lol
Take care,

Cinnamon's a GIRL!!!

rainbowsrus Feb 12, 2009 04:21 PM

I still vote girl!!! But was not certain. While palpating, found there was a "softer area" just post vent but NOT anywhere near long enough down the tail like a male would have.

April already knows, breeding trials will be the ultimate deciding factor!!!

Isnt that a big spur for a female? Also when I looked at my females, their tales taper down and get narrow almost immediately after the vent. this animal doesnt do that the tail does not taper that fast.
Obviously a few that know alot more then me voted female, so I am probably wrong, but it did appear male to me.
