It really depends on what kind of pet you want. Leopard Geckos are mellow and are able to be handled.

Day Geckos are more for display and can get pretty feisty.

Crested Geckos are also a good choice, but they require a bit more effort than Leopards in terms of their husbandry requirements. They need to be maintained at higher humidity, meaning they need to be misted at least once daily, possibly more depending on ambient humidity. Also, you have to put more effort into cleaning their enclosure, as unlike leos, they don't pick a bathroom corner; they just let it fly whenever the need strikes.

They are definitely handleable, with the caveat that they stick to anything with the pads on their toes and are strong jumpers. You can usually tell when they're about to take a leap though, because they change their grip on you beforehand, so it's not too tough to stay a step ahead of them.

If you're ok with the cleaning needs and can deal with the odd misguided leap, they make great pets. They do some downright silly things, and I can't tell you the number of times mine has made me laugh, usually by getting herself into a position that doesn't seem like it should be possible.

Leopard Geckos are excellent as well as African Fat-Tails.
