How many momma rats in tub??...

Daniel Klopson Feb 13, 2009 01:25 AM

Hey guys, my rat rack is made to use the black concrete mixing tubs like so many folks use. Probably about 17" wide by 28" long, how many momma rats with pinks would you keep in a tub that size? At this time I was trying to have 4 females with litters in one, what do you think? Dan

I keep 3 females to 1 male in that size tubs. Very seldom is there more than 2 moms with pups at a time. In some other tubs I pull pregnant rats & put them in a tub alone, or with only one other pregnant or nursing female. 3 or more litters in the same tub will usually cause them to eat some of the young, it gets pretty stressful to them.

Have a good one!

I keep 1.4 in a bin roughly that size without any problems at all. Also, if you have healthy colonies, expect there to be at least 3 litters or so constantly with 4 or 5 females. That's been my experience at least over the last 7 years.

Hey Dan post some pictures of your new racks..
By the way I do 1.6 when they are NEW females (never had a litter) seems like one always has problems with the first litter, then after they have a litter I thin them out to 1.5 and keep it that way for the 8 month life of the group, that keeps me at 120.600.2400 the question is how often do you want to clean. 1.5 you will HAVE to clean every week! I also found that using a FLUFFY bedding like Americas Best works better then a saw dust type of bedding or pellets. Pellets work best with some other bedding on top and last longest but the pink death rate goes up if you have new females who don't know how to nest properly.
Thanks Phil
