Questions about my beardie?

faygo19 Feb 13, 2009 01:05 PM

Hey I have noticed that latly a lot of people are saying their dragons are not eating and they are only laying in the hottest basking spot. I am having the same problem but my dragon will eat every other day but very little. I just changed his cage from crushed walnut to ceramic tile floor. I also added a larger piece of wood so he could lay his whole body on it. I read that was what they like to do. Temps are 92 in the basking light and around 75 on the coolest end. Also I live in Michigan so my house gets down to 68 for the night time. I give him options of collard greens latly but since i switched over from spring mix he seems to not take interest in it. I also soak him once a week in the bath tub which is the normal time for him to poop. He is a male. If you have any ideas or if this is normal anyones input would help.

Your basking spot temp. is too low. It should be 105-110ish. Ambient on the hot side should be high 80's to low 90's. Think of a hot day outside in bare feet. The ambient temperature is what the thermometer says in the shade. A basking spot would be the road where it is much hotter and could burn your feet.

With such a low basking temp. your dragon cannot fully warm up and therefore will be lethargic and slow to eat and digest food.

I am using a 150w basking spot lamp from zoo med and the basking lamp is 10 inches from where he can bask. Should i do something more to get the higher heat?

i changed the bulb and noticed a major increase in heat. I guess that solved the problem. Thanks for the help. I was looking around and found that www.shopbhg.com had the best price on reptisun 10.0 and if you use presiden10 as a coupon you get 10% off. Does anyone else use a different website that is chepaer than under 20 bucks a light?

Funny. That's petmountain.com selling there. Pet Mountain is always the cheapest for Zoo Med bulbs. The 10% off is better at the address you mentioned vs. $5 off on their main site.

How are you measuring the temps? What is the cage size? 150 sounds like a lot. Can you post a picture?

I have him in a 65 gallon tank 48 x 12 x 21 I think it was just a problem with the light going bad. I am using a zoo med digital thermometer.
