Scary shipping story......

rainbowsrus Feb 13, 2009 05:44 PM

I received two BRB's today via Delta Dash. There was a mix-up between Delta and the shipper so instead of same day, they overnighted in Atlanta before catching the early flight here.
When I opened the box my heart sank. In the tubs they were belly up, colder than cold, lifeless and limp. No signs of movement or life whatsoever. Heat pack was barely putting out any heat at all. I thought for sure they were dead. I've pulled dead ones from litters and these were just like that except of course they were also very cold. I've received cold ones before but none any where near as cold as these two.

Still at the Delta counter, I pulled them out held them each cupped in one hand. After about 10-15 minutes I thought I could see some movement in the male but was not sure. A few minutes later he clearly took a breath, small but clear. A little while later he started moving around with very little control. Eventually once he warmed up enough he seemed to regain control and pressed himself to my warm hand.

While this was going on the female showed zero signs of life, clearly warmer than when I first picked her up but still just as limp as when I took her out. A while later after at least 20 - 30 inutes of holding her, I actually gave up and put her back in her cup. As I set the cup down I thought I saw her move. Pulled her back out and held her some more. Same sequence of recovery but at a much, much slower pace.

I have them both home in their quarantine enclosures. Will keep you posted on their progress and maybe some pics later.... Till then you'll just have to wonder what they are.

Important point for all, don't assume lack of life signs means dead. Being ectotherms, they have survival skills we can only imagine. They can and do survive very cold temps, probably not for extended periods but at least for short term exposures. I know what ultimately saved them was slow gentle warming cupped in my hands. I have read that that warming too fast can be bad for cold snakes. I don't know if that's true or not, I do know that slow warming worked on these two lifeless babies. I wish I had brought a temp gun so I could know how cold they actually were, they did not feel as cold as an ice cube but pretty darn close. They were making my hands cold for the first 10-15 minutes.

HOLY MOLY!!! I can't believe that they were still alive! So glad that they did make it, however that was a very close one.

You know that I have been very anxious lately to find out what secret you are hiding this time!!! Can't wait to finally see the pics!!

Thats what I was thinking too, but not sure. He must've gotten a good deal if it is the abby one. MAN I wanted that male to go with my Paisley!! Alas, he was just too pricey for me.

That is a scary story. I'm glad they pulled through for now. I hope they continue to improve and are healthy and happy from now on.

You're lucky. This week, on another forum, I've read several other shipping stories that have not turned out so well.

Jeff is right. Delta used to be the way to go because it was really the only option. It's now an outdated, inconvenient method of shipping. I really don't see why anyone still uses it. Fed-Ex is the most reliable, responsible way to ship these snakes.

There's also the fact that it's just plain cold in most of the country right now. i have friends that say theu will ship animals 365 days of the year to anywhere in the country. I don't know if I agree with this. I still suspect that shipping during extreme weather is risky.

I know it's not your fault. It's really up to the shipper. It's their responsibility, so they get to pick how the animal is sent.

Glad the snakes are OK!

They both are doing fine, seem none the worse for their ordeal. The seller and I have been in contact and they do take full responsibility and will do whatever to make it right if things turn south from here. Just want I want to hear and just the kind of person I want to deal with. Already had names picked out but have changed them after their near death experiences.

Pics are crappy, not taken in my normal "studio" to preserve quarantine protocol. Lighting is off and colors are off as well but you get the idea....

First is Azalia (Pronounced ah zah lee ah) (hebrew - god has spared) She's a normal looking literate to her brother.

And as a few have already guessed, the primary specimen is the genetic striped baby. And yes Aubrey, I did get a better deal

Lazarus (pronounced LAH zah rus) (Hebrew - God is my help)

Very pretty Dave, and great names. I figured it was you who picked them up and I'm glad they appear to be ok after their ordeal. I worked with the seller on another animal the same week and can also report him to be a good guy who I'll do business with again.

That bright neon orange stripe looks pretty neat.

I KNEW IT!! After you said my first guess was wrong, I got to thinking that it might be this guy. MAN I wanted him sooooo BAD, but just could not shell out that kind of cash.

I am very glad they are both doing well, despite the scary journey.

Hmmmm....... perhaps Paisley may have to pay Lazarus a visit in 2-3 years???

Congrats on another sweet addition to your already awesome collection!

LOL, When I saw him I just had to have him. One wonderful thing about producing and selling my babies is I then have the cash to drop coin on something like this.

Remind me of Paisley's origins? I remember you picked her up at a show and that the seller thought she was a fluke. Who produced her. PM me if you prefer. As I remember, she's a LOT like Lazarus.

And yeah, I'm sure he'd be up for a conjugal visit, as long as Paisley is willing to share!!!!

Yeah, I got Paisley at the '07 NARBC Tinley Park show, but talked to the breeder about her beforehand. Her parents are normal looking, and she was the only one in the litter to look this way.

I also spoke with the breeder of Lazarus about him and about my Paisley a few weeks ago. He says it is quite possible that she comes from his stock, as he has sold normal looking BRBs from those lines before.

Who knows for sure, but I would suspect they would have interesting offspring as their aberrancies are very similar!

Here are some pics I took of her today.

Dave,
I'm glad they made it. Tough little guys. The stripper is really pretty. I'm out of the loop on these things; you'll have to give a little history when you post some better pics.
Thanks for sharing,
Paul

I draw the line at "money shots" no simple strippers in my pics!!
