Night Crawlers

elidogs Feb 14, 2009 12:49 PM

Is it ok to feed canadian night crawlers to savannah monitors? I saw a youtube care video for them, and the guy said you should not feed them. Didn't say why...I feed them to my african bullfrogs all the time without problems.

SpyderPB6 Feb 14, 2009 01:51 PM

If they have enough heat as FR would say, you could feed them nails.

Cheers
Mike.

BIGHYDRO Feb 14, 2009 07:20 PM

My waters have always loved them.

Cool I'm going to feed them then.

Our Chomper eats anything that moves when we let him roam outside in the summer, and never had a problem.

dekaybrown Feb 16, 2009 12:04 AM

Appreciate the comment.

Still needs some work, doing it all myself....

Eventually it will have care sheets that I have authored myself, as I find most to be inaccurate and filled with misinformation.

A couple of the species I work with don't even have care sheets at all.

Thanks again, your compliment means a lot.

You're breeding Dekay's? I like the little snakes no one pays attention to, and think dekay's are pretty cool. Have you gotten them on anything other than slugs/tadpoles?

Do yourself a favor and stick to researching forums like this and others for usefull information.

dekaybrown Feb 16, 2009 10:20 AM

There is a ton of good information on here!

Even though some of these folks like to "lock horns" sometimes, it's always for the greater good of the animals, look past it and read what they have to say.

If someone gives bad advice or misinformation, it gets "corrected" fast.

Skip youtube for anything other than entertainment value, most of those folks have no clue what they are doing, and many wind up with sick or dead monitors.

When I see people keeping Savs in dog kennel boxes with no dirt, I want to slap them upside the head.

I don't really like the negative vibe on the forums but its probably better then youtube your right.

robyn@ProExotics Feb 16, 2009 05:06 PM

The funny thing is there is a whole culture of reptile keepers on youtube that have their own little world, and they make all these videos as "experts".

And in every one I have seen so far, they give absolutely horrendous suggestions and advice on reptile care.

That group does NOT include reptile breeders like Ralph Davis or BHB, who have hundreds of videos, I am talking about the "hobbyist" vids.

I am talking really, really horrible stuff.

I concur, There are some great herp vids on there, I was referring to the idiots who make the crap videos, just search "monitor" and see how many stupid ones show up.

I saw one "Savannah monitor inhales mice" the lizard was in a dog crate! and they were joking "if that mouse effs up my monitor, you're paying for it dude"

I may not be a professional, far from it.

But I'd rather take my advice from these folks that have successfully maintained and bread collections for years, they have legit web sites, and true experience.

You guys are absolutely correct, some of the you-tube videos regarding monitors/reptiles in general are awful. The sad part is, it is likely that more individuals looking to get into monitors/reptiles seek advice and/or ideas from you-tube then sites like kingsnake.

dekaybrown Feb 19, 2009 08:03 PM

Once I wrote a letter to the "old lady" who sleeps with Savs in her bed.

She was loaded with misinformation and off her rocker to boot.

About a year ago I locked horns with Frank on here, but the more I read from/about him, the more I realized his advice was spot on.

Our monitor thrives because I had the common sense to listen to people who are SUCCESSFUL in rearing up LOTS of monitors until they truly get old.

We are still not done, his new indoor enclosure will require that I put 3 extra support jacks in the basement.

The outdoor pen I am putting up this summer, we are renting a backhoe and pouring a concrete slab. Don't want Chomper digging his way out.

Hi Wayne,

That sounds like a waste of money and a waste of resources. Try digging it out about 2 feet down, then covering the bottom with Shade screen. Maybe two layers. If your still worried, then a plastic wire will help.

What that does is give your monitor the ability to burrow, and it will drain, Monitors are like desert plants(many plants), They require soil that drains. They hate a wet bed, hmmmmmmmmmm lets not go there.

Anyway, I build cages that way in 91 and they are still in use with no problems. They even housed large white throats. Cheers
