supplements for f/t

blwhle Feb 15, 2009 03:59 AM

I feed my Peruvian f/t rats. I know that some of the nutrition is lost after a period of time from being frozen. Are there any vitamin supplements I can use periodically to make up for any lost nutritional value?

generally the "cutoff" before any meats containing vitamins, minerals and proteins being frozen is up to 6 months (if vaccum sealed) and i believe 3-4 months if frozen otherwise

with minimal loss of nutrient content. I definitely agree with the above post if two criteria are followed. Number one is that the packages obviously need to be as airtight as possible, and the second is the temperature. Vacuum sealing won't help if your freezer temps are above zero F. Zero degrees F is the highest temperature you can allow for any type of extended storage. Minus 5 F is better, as bacterial activity is halted at this temp and below and will continue at a slow rate at any temps above this. The absolute best is minus 15 F or lower as all enzymatic breakdown activity is halted below this temp. However, most home freezers will not go this low, but most will go down to minus 5 F which is quite adequate for long term storage of 6 to 9 months. A freezer thermometer is a good investment to check for proper temps as it is impossible to tell otherwise.

Can you recommend an accurate freezer thermometer?

Thanks.
