Need some info

asia2003 Sep 10, 2003 07:43 PM

Hello,

I live in daytona, and someone in our area just found a florida box turtle in a neighbors yard, as I am the resident reptile lady (currently I keep a water dragon, tegu, and a sulcata tortoise), of course they brought him to me. The only problem is, I have no idea on how to care for him, so as I belong to a number of the kingsnake forums, I thought it only right to stay with what I do know, and ask you guys. First of all, I do have a large enclosure 6ft x 4ft with a shallow pool in it already, which he seems to like, so housing isnt a problem at this point, but I do need some info on diet, sexing, age etc. He/she is approximately 6 inches long, and as soon as I take a pic I will post it for you.

thanks in advance.

read this forum a bit. They are omnivorous and easy to care for if you live in their native climate and keep them outside. I'd encourage you to consider expanding your pen in time, but it is adequate for now. Make sure it has lots of deep shady places to hide, and some sunny spots to sit in.

This forum is chock full of helpful hints for caring for box turtles. Dietary requirements for the floridas match up with the rest of the north american subspecies.

Please check also on the legality of taking a wild caught florida box turtle. I'm not a floridian, but I do know they have some wierd laws about them down there. You may need a permit or something to keep it, since they are considered a threatened species.
