No baby sav's this time.

rappstar609 Feb 15, 2009 05:54 PM

Threw the eggs away today, they were all moldy and stinky. I am guessing they were not fertilized. I am going to take the other sav to the vet and have her/him sexed by a professional and maybe add another male to the group. Or not. It sucks the eggs were bad though. Balls.

Not to worry- How's the girl doing? I'm really hoping she makes a full recovery, so you might have better luck next time!

rappstar609 Feb 15, 2009 07:52 PM

Doing great, she savagely ate like 50 superworms yesterday in a matter of 2 minutes so I thought I'd try some mice again and she downed 3 full sized mice just like she used to smiley face.
I am still concerned about the bigger one picking on her. I am having a hard time deciding if I should separate them or not because one second they will be fine laying right next to/on top of each other and the next second they will be fighting like a bunch of hooligans. I had the girl in a temp. setup so she could get her strength back without worrying about fatso and put her back in recently and they were right back at it again.

Sorry the eggs went bad. With how they were all over on top of the substrate I am not surprised. Keep you chin up though. One of my 3 clutches of Argus eggs last year were all bad. The first clutch had a 100% hatch rate and the third clutch is still incubating after 150 days. Hopefully your next clutch will be good.

They look great...I see you have a Peacock bass I bet he is a blast.

Hi,

Judging by the bulbes on his nose, the big one is a male.
So I think you have a pair.

I agree, it 'looks' more male than the female, but is it really that simple?

SHvar Feb 16, 2009 10:30 AM

Sorry about the eggs.
Watch having a vet or anyone probe them, its definitely not 100%, much more of a guess. Also being that they are not snakes probing doesnt work with them, and they can be permanently damaged if done wrong.
I have photos somewhere of eversions, and from several monitors I "popped" years ago from multiple species, of 3 species the females hemiclitori were just as long as the hemipenes of the larger males, and smaller males, one or 2 females everted longer than any of the males.
Sometimes it is very difficult to properly sex them, usually with young monitors everting happens alot on its own and it becomes easier to tell.

rappstar609 Feb 16, 2009 04:04 PM

I am hoping that is the case and I have a pair, but I will just have to wait and see. The vet's guess is just as good as anyone else's. Now that I am more prepared for future eggs hopefully the next time around will be a success, given the bigger one is a male.

The Timor monitor is also a blast so far, He enjoys watching me just as much as I enjoy watching him, the only time he really freaks out is when I open up the cage, other than that he is always out in the open running about. He is not so keen on being handled yet, after chasing him around the cage if I can grab him he struggles to get free for about the first 2 min then he settles down, but I have only attempted handling him twice, since I don't want him to start connecting me with fear or starts to think every time he sees me I am going to try to grab him. He is still so tiny, about 3 or 4 inches, but he is smashing crickets every time I offer them.

I got the peacock bass yesterday, he is so awesome. he has fooled me into thinking he was dead/dying 3 times now, but now I know he is just a faker.

The only time my monitors have dropped eggs all over the place is when they don't like any of the possible nesting sites or when the eggs were infertile (i.e. no male was available). I would like to know how they know the eggs are infertile. Monitors are the cleverest reptiles and all but still I wouldn't expect them to know that weeks after the mating season....
