Need advice on handling new snakes

katiehfnr Feb 15, 2009 10:36 PM

Just got a few milk snakes from online. A few are extremely aggressive, they are babies. the meanest is a albino nelson. Now just a few questions on how to tame it down, its name is skittles, lol. but should i just pick it up and hold it firmly for a few minuets a day, should i let it move about? just not shure. im not scared about getting bit, the thing has already bit me several times just from opening its tank. it seems to jet propel its self out of nowhere.the bite doesn't drawl blood yet. but want to try to get it under control before it is bigger and can. i heard they have pretty big teeth. so any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the world of baby milks! Some are calmer than others but its quite normal.

Honestly, I don't even really hold the babies much until they're 12 months old. They will calm down on their own, especially that nelson's. I've never seen a wild and biting adult nelson's.

I think if you do hold it daily for a few minutes, it will calm down quicker. Just have plenty of paper towels around to clean up the musk.

I would handle it about once a week. I don't like to handle babies before feeding, or a day or two after. When they get excited like that it can cause them to regurgitate.

When you do handle them, do not try to restrain it, but instead let it crawl from hand to hand or try to get it to twist thru your fingers. Typically after a few minutes of this it will settle down. If you try to restrain it it will only try harder to get away.

Don't handle the young snakes more than once every other day and do not restrain them when you do. After a few months you should have fairly tame snakes.
