Mating cues

papasumoto1 Feb 16, 2009 08:34 AM

Does anyone know what ball pythons use to recognize members of their own species? It's apparently nothing visual due the ease at which morphs can be bred to eachother.

Mating and other communication between snakes is almost always through chemical scent. Thus why the tongue and vomeronasal organ are so sensitive and important. Many species have oils that flow over their eyes that also collect chemicals and drain into the vomeronasal.

A snake with a tongue that cannot collect chemicals or an infected vomer organ will not breed because it won't recognize the chemical cues of a potential partner.
