Hey,
Take your cues from where these snakes are from; tropical Rainforests. I've explored areas of Venezuela (Orinoco delta), Guyana (Esequibo river), Suriname (Suriname river) and the mouth of the Amazon in Brazil and can attest to a habitat of deep moist substrate of forest litter(I use small, decorative bark nuggets covered in a thick layer of sphagnum moss which I wet several times a week), that is dark, humid and warm. Most keepers maintain their rainbows at temperatures in the low to high seventies. I offer temps from high 60's up to 90 degrees and all my rainbows use temps in the high 80's at times, however, most times they can be found at temps between 75 and 82 degrees. My gravid female is thermoregulating between 82 and 88.5 degrees currently. If you can offer a wide range of temperatures this is obviously ideal. Ambient temps is also the way to go; belly heat is not ideal but will work (remember, tropical snakes, rainforest, ambient temps). I use ceramic heat emitters of varying wattages; this creates a vertical and horizontal temperature gradient. Brazilian rainbow boas are climbers, give them the opportunity. It kills me when I read people state that they won't use tall cages; wrong. A snake in the rainforest that won't utilize trees; I don't think so.
I think its great that you want to make a naturalistic environment for your snake. Have fun!
Paul
