Need advice on how to tame a snake!

rustybeard Feb 17, 2009 11:23 AM

Hello everyone. I have what I think is a small problem but I would like the advice of people more experienced than I.

I am more experienced with your basic corn snake so I decided to try a new pet (Jungle carpet Python). The little guy is about a year old eating up a storm supper healthy but also supper aggressive.

My question is what is the best way for me to tame him. I would like to handle the little guy every once in a while with out him biting me. (His teeth are getting longer so its starting to hurt more! LOL)

Someone told me that JCP's are super aggressive when they are younger but start to calm down as they get older, but my JCP is still as aggressive as ever almost a year later. PLEASE HELP thank you much

Some are more aggresive than others. Some tame down and some do not. I have had jungles that were tame as babys, some took up to two years to be handled with no biting, and a few that I had just never tamed. With all that beind said, most carpets can grow into docile adults. Trust on both you and the snake must be built. When does the biting occur and how are you taking the snake out of its cage? Do you feed in or out of the cage.

I recommend feeding in the cage and touching the snake with a hook when ever the cage is openend except when feeding. When handling gently hook the snake and take it out on the hook. Let it crawl up the hook and onto your hands and arms. Try to not restrict or grab the snake as that is when it will get scared and bite. Mimic a tree and just let it crawl on you. Move slowly nd deliberately with short sessions and then longer as the snake acclimates to you more. Soon both of you should get along just fine. Another thing that I do is place a piece of a worn, unwashed t-shirt in the snake's cage. This gets the snake used to your scent and associates it with the safety of the cage. Best of luck-Bill.

The more you handle it (calmly), the better it will be.
