slacker6848 Feb 17, 2009 02:31 PM

does anyone know any good care sheets for Bothriechis schlegelii, Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus, and S.c. edwardsii? I've been trying to find some information on their captive husbantry but haven't been able to find much.

Thanks
Zack

As for the eyelash viper it will be the same as others from that Reagan as to temp and humidity ,and will feed well on F/T pinky mice or anoles . The Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus
http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=54&Itemid=26 and http://www.texas-venomous.com/tergeminus.html and for diet try http://www.unco.edu/nhs/biology/faculty_staff/mackessy/diet.doc . Hope this helps. David

Thanks a lot, I'll read over those, I plan to get into those species in a year or so after we get a new house and I wanna start getting as much info on them as I can. I've read the Article from Reptiles Mag September 2004's issue from John Hollister on eyelash vipers and found it quite informative but also wanted to get more opinions on their husbandry

Thanks
Zack

Edwardsii are very straight forward captives. Care is the same as most desert Crotalus species. I keep mine on paper towels (I keep all my animals on newspaper or paper substrates), with a hidebox and a shallow water bowl. She was wildcaught by me in September '08. She refused to eat for the first several meals, but I realized that was due to the color of the mice (white)...she consistently feeds on dark colored mice (which would make sense since wild rodents are seldom white). She's been doing great for me since.

If it is wildcaught, it may refuse rodents, in which cases, scenting with lizards is recommended. However, I've heard of very few people who had to resort to this, they will normally take appropriately sized rodents after they settle in.

While small, these guys are capable of producing a serious bite. Their venom, drop for drop, has been compared to that of scutes, so you don't want to take a bite. I've heard that they give a very high percentage of dry bites. I personally know of a keeper who sustained at least five (!!) bites within a very short period of time (~2 months), all of which were dry or presented very minimal symptoms of envenomation.

Thanks a lot man I only get CB animals that are feeding primary on rodents. It's be my first hot but I have experience herping in the while and finding copperheads, coral snakes, and when I was living in Florida I've found Pygmy's which is one of my favs to catch, quite feisty. I've also dealt with a 7' suri that just wanted to tag in the face anytime I messed with him, fun stuff, lol, I know these species are nothing like that and which is the reason why I wont get one for a year or more to make sure I feel confident and know how to handle them which I'm pretty confident as it is just never hurts to get more training.

Thanks
Zack
