Rat Bedding

NickDaFish97 Feb 17, 2009 04:38 PM

This is for the people who breed their own feeder's.
Just curious as to what you use as substrate for your breeder rat colony's?
And also, what are your thought's on pine shaving's for rat bedding?
Thank's in advance for your replies.

i use pine shavings it has a nice smell to it so it covers up the feeders smell and have not noticed any problems with it

I just recently started raising my own feeders and I have had no problems using pine. I cleaned my tanks yesterday and although I did it anyway there was no offensive smell after a week.

When I built the first two racks they had a watering system on them but I took it off. The racks have wheels on them and I like to be able to move them around. It seems that there is always bedding ending up on the floor behind them as well as any rat that hits the floor. Plus it only takes about 10 minutes for me and my wife to fill the all bottles every other day. No biggie in my book. Jeff

P.S. The rack design came off of Clay Davenports site.

worked for me for 2 decades, for all rodents...even the ones they say "can't be on pine"....

as for the pic...glad I am not the only idiot that fills at least 60 bottles a day....every day.....no matter what...!...LOL

...I just don't want to see what 5 gallons of water looks like after it drips down through 5 or more levels of a rack and onto the floor, wet rodents, stink and drowning kids....

....total bottles here?.....like 114?....wow...even I didn't think it was that many......
