new to garters?

katiehfnr Feb 18, 2009 04:47 AM

Well new to thinking about getting a few. When i was a itty bitty girl from ages 4 and up i would catch loads during the summer and my mum wouldnt let me keep them. but now, i own 4 corn snakes, 2 apricot pueblans, 1 albino nelson, 1 reg. nelson, and a cali king. I seen at our show the last time itty bitty garter snakes that were albino and priced at 15/ ea. I didnt get any, and i was upset with my self after the show that i didnt scoop them up. There is a show this saturday, in columbus. and i am hoping to find some again there. i was wondering if some one can give me advice about what to feed these guys. the last ones i seen were no longer than a few inches. and can you house two males together? just curious. and would they breed with any other type of garter snake? and um i guess any one else have any advice? Thanks

Garter snakes like to eat fish, worms and when they get big enough pinky mice.

You can house 2 males together without a problem, There are some mixed views, however myself and MANY garter keepers that I know keep two in a single viv without any problems at all.

Yes Garter snakes will cross breed, so it's not a good idea to mix species of opposite gender together.
