Charlotte, NC Show last weekend

First a Disclaimer:
I became aware that many of you professional breeders owe allegiance to one show organizer or another. As a consumer I wasn’t aware of this until recently.
This report is just one unbiased consumer’s observation, and I welcome any contradicting reports.
I also need to mention that in the last 20 years, I’ve attended all manner of shows all over the USA, and occasionally foreign, as a consumer only because my work and play travel gave me the opportunity; some of these being the larger Daytona, Texas, Chicago shows to very small rural “pet shows” that can have one booth for reptiles.
.
.
As a way of dealing with the winter doldrums last weekend, my wife and I attended the Charlotte Reptile Show. I just felt the need to say that I was pleasantly surprised at the diversified mix of animals and the number of folks attending.

In several shows in the recent years, there seems to have been an ad nauseum leaning towards one herp type or another. At this one, there was:
· A reasonable representation of small Boids, foreign and domestic, and Ball pythons with a noticeable reduction in the big pythons (IMHO - a good thing).
· A surprising mixed showing of Colubrids, natural and morphs. Ratsnakes being well represented for this time of the year.
· More lizards than just Bearded Dragons.
· A fair showing of CB terrapins and tortoises.
· A fair amount of hardware and husbandry suppliers.
· A few cosmetics (Jewelry, t-shirts, etc.)
· And it seemed like attendance was pretty good, especially young families.

A final note: the number of misidentified herps, that pop up in almost any collection of deli-cups, seemed to be reduced as well.

Man..too bad it wasn't scheduled for this weekend. I'm heading up Friday..
Some of the smaller shows have been getting pretty good reviews lately from some vendor friends of mine. Good to hear.
So, did you come home with any new mouths to feed??

Not a one followed me home, Mark.....LOL
There were many nice animals.....
The drive to Charlotte was 3 1/2 hours one way, so it was more of a "get out of the house" visit. It sure beat sitting on the couch, or salamandering in the snow!! LOL
.

PS Look for email.

I went to this show and live here in Charlotte, and was soo happy we finally got a show, and that it was not all of one type of snake! As you can tell from my signature, I love colubrids, and there were a WIDE variety of colubrids at this show as well as Bill noted a wide variety of everything else, yet by show standards this was a VERY small show, but it was definatly quality here. I was very very happy. I was looking to find mates for my Northern Pine, Eastern King, Gray Banded King and I found all of them, and at good prices. I have had friends go to the 08 Daytona and Columbia shows and they did not find what I wanted, yet I found everything on my list here. My friend who was selling 10 of my tarantulas and a scorpion for me as well as his Hogg Island babies, was worried that this show was going to be mostly "Lookers" and no buyers, but this was definatly not the case. I was talking to exhibitors there and they liked the show alot and plan on comming back. Charlotte is not only the second largest banking capital (yeah dont think our area is not freaking out about the economy...) but its the Largest city in both NC and SC, and yet there are only the shows in Raliegh and Columbia, or Greenville SC to go to. While this show still has growing to do, I am confident, and extreemly hopefull that this show will become a mainstay in our area, and its only 30 min drive from where I live in Charlotte's downtown area! love it!
