my fat tail is too slow to catch em!

alieliza Sep 10, 2003 09:48 PM

Every time i feed my seven month old gecko, i feel like i have to herd the crickets into a corner for him to get them, cause it seems as if hes too slow to catch them himself, cause they just run right by (and of course he has to do his little tail wagging dance before he strikes.) Is there a better method than me hovering over his tank sending crickets his way? if i put them in a dish, pull off their legs, will they attract his attention? he eats meal worms from a dish....
advice is appreciated. thanks

he probably will eat them out of a bowl, try and see.

This new product just came out. Its called "Jitter Bug". I belive its made either by ESU Reptile or Zoo Med, not exactly sure. In any case, its a vibrating dish which shakes up dead food (such as canned crickets and worms) so it looks live. Untill now, I didnt even consider purchasing the canned crickets since I know my gecko wont eat them but now it somewhat makes sense. Try it out maybe it'll work. I know my petshop carries them but I'm not sure if petco/petsmart and larger stores have started yet.

Is there any reason that feeding him from a dish would be a bad thing? I feel like it seems a little too domesticated for a reptile. Is there any nutritional downfall to the canned crickets? (of course dusted with vitamins) For some reason i just feel more comfortable feeding him live food. I did pull off four of the six legs of some crickets and put them right in the dish with the meal worms. The crickets were moving around enough to get his attention. Is this ok? or should he continue to hunt for his food?
thanks

I talked to a guy in a local reptile center, and he said that he finds it hard to believe that he is indeed to slow, and that he thinks i am just making it too easy for him, that hes becoming lazy. I put about ten or twelve crickets in his tank last night, and he doesnt seem to have eaten very many of them. he usually eats about seven or so.
any advice would be apppreciated.
thanks
