constructing frog tank, need opinions on backround

Hlynn1975 Sep 10, 2003 10:20 PM

I'm trying to decide what to use for a backround for my dart frog tank. It's a 72g bowfront and I'm using pvc to form a tiered false bottom, the back is 8", middle 6", and front 4". I am trying to decide if I want to use the Great Stuff Foam to create the backround and then carve some holes for planting broms and the cover the foam with spagnum moss, or I could use cork bark. I've seen lots of cork bark tanks but was wondering if anyone had used the foam/moss method and if they would post pics for me to see.

Also, would copper wire be bad in a frog tank? I have some heavy gauge copper wire that I was thinking of using to create a trellis-like frame for my pothos to climb on so it would eventually grow to create a "cave" for my frogs to hide in. If copper wont' work I would appreciate any suggestions of things that would work.

Thanks,
Heather

I normally use cork for backgrounds due to the ease. The new trendy methods are using the foam, and I have even used a combination of the two (about a year ago). We placed the cork tightly on the back, and sprayed the foam to fill the space behind. This worked extremely well. I normally don't go through much effort to fill the gaps, and lean the cork on the back for larger tanks. If you just have this one display tank, it will not cost too much using cork, and I would personally go that route. Also, remember there are those cocos panels from the Vivarium (distributed I believe by Blake Wood and Black Jungle (?)), coco fiber door mats (which break down fairly rapidly, but still work), and a number of other things.
Best,
Justin
