Finding a reputable & med. cost herp vet

Omnivorous Feb 19, 2009 09:47 PM

I thought I saw somewhere around here something for helping people find vets who specialize or have decent knowledge for herps in your local area. Anyone know of where I can get some places to compare. Not just one vet in all of San Diego.

I am purchaseing several leos and they are the most expensive I have purchased yet. Its a significant cost for me so I wanted to find a vet in my local area that doesnt have to necessarily specialize in herps but at least be able to treat them. They can do dogs & cats too but my normal vet for my dog and cats doesnt treat herps. I live in San Diego, CA USA.

I wanted to find one to get one of my leos skin checked and when I get my leos in from the breeder I would like to find a hopefully inexpensive way to get some stool samples from each of my leos checked for parisites. I dont have any reason to suspect that they have parisites or any of my leos have parisites but I figure if I am spending close to $1,600 on a group of leos I think the extra money spent on a simple fecal exam might be a good idea.

Unless its like $200 per fecal exam then I might have to do it but slowly mabie one at a time. Anyone know what something like that costs around ballpark?

I would preferr a low cost vet because I would like to get hopefully 8 fecal exams but cost is not my ultimate decision maker. I will ultimately do whats best for my leos but I try to cut costs where I can. I no longer buy crickets and mealworms from the local pet store. If its not going to be bad for my leos and I can save some money great if not I will try to find a way. Mabie the fecal exams are cheaper than an actual physical exam where you have to bring in your leo.

I'm in Minnesota, so I can't recommend a specific vet for you, but my understanding is that fecal exams are (usually) relatively inexpensive. You'll of course want fresh samples, but you should be able to get all 8 done for a reasonable price. I'm guessing it wouldn't be more than $30 per, but I could be off on that. When I've had to actually take a leo in to the vet, it hasn't cost me more than $70 or so for the exam and everything, so I'd think a fecal would be considerably less than that. Of course, in California, everything is more expensive, so who knows?

My problem right now is they all want me to get a physical exam with the fecal samples so its like $50 for physical $22 fecal per leo. They dont want to let me take the fecal samples only. Because "if fecals come back positive they have to be weighed for treatment". I am like I dont suspect anything why cant I do the fecals and if theres something wrong I am happy to bring them in.
