Breeding and Genetics Literature

Omnivorous Feb 19, 2009 10:02 PM

I am trying to find some literature on Leopard Gecko Breeding and Genetics. I am trying to get info on breeding leopard geckos and some info to help me understand the genetics behind it. I asked something similar but was mostly told get Ron Tempers book wich I did and read but that had some great information in it wich helped me out some but it was mostly an all information type of book and I need more towards breeding and genetics. Any books or places to go would help. Stuff on helping me figure out what happens when you breed x to y and such also.

I don't believe there is anything out there that is as specific as you are looking for such as how to make a eclipes or how to make a blizzard or any morph for that matter.

Ron Trempers book does explain what you should get when your breeding recessive genes and has charts to help. he explains recessive gene to normal, het to het, double recessive and triple recessive. all you have to do is replace the morph he used with the ones you have. He even explained how he made the RAPTOR. I'm sorry but that is as thorough as you will find. But if you do find something that is better please share with us. GL

I agree..........once you master the understanding of the basic genetics Ron Tremper talkes about in his book (recessive, polygenetic/line-bred, CoDom, and Dominant traits then you can essentially replace any recessive trait with another and still figure out the projected genotypes and phenotypes concerning that trait.

My advice, read that section again.....read it again......read it again. Make sure you DO understand everything he talks about in the genetics section. Once you do understand it, you will see that punnet squares for every single morph X morph can be easily figured out yourself.

Also, one of the better online sites I have seen in on Geckos ETC = www.geckosetc.com/htm/genetics.htm I think they do a great job of explaining genetics here.
