Mite killing methods

Worldsocold Feb 19, 2009 11:16 PM

Now im not posting this to say I have mites however I have found something that i find to work considerably better and cheaper than your name brand product.

Permethrin 10, Its can be found at farm and fleet etc. however the Permethrin 10 by itself is awesome however it needs to be diluted and heres what ive found has worked.

1 oz of Permethrin 10 to 19 oz of water

If mites are already present and in large numbers use 2 ozs Permethrin 10 to 19 oz's of water!

There is also an organic alternative to Permethrin 10 however i have no experience with this, but it should work just the same.

Go to WalMart, buy their Equate brand bed lice spray...avoiding the strange looks from the checkout lady when you buy 6 cans, lol. Same ingredient, 5 oz of spray for $5 a can. Works great. Spray and let it dry, spraying of course the ENTIRE cage, inside and out. Remember that an adult mite can travel 50' in an hour and can sniff out snakes a long way off.

I used to use Provent-A-Mite but found the Walmart Equate Bedding spray identical. I have used it for years when ever I get a snake mite infestation and it works very well. What is important is to use it exactly as PAM. Do not spry the snake directly but remove the snake and water bowl. Spray the enclosure and any cage furniture. Let dry completely and put the snake/water bowl back in. Repeat in two weeks. Give it time to work and Equate will get rid of the mites.

When I go through the Walmart checkout with the spray I make sure to scratch my head furiously-really freaks out the clerk-lol. Bill.

Ive heard of methods like that never tried them myself but the permetherine 10 is the same ingredient just by its self and its relatively cheap for how much of it you can make

Permetherine works great. Been using it for awhile now. 100% Natural and safe for the snakes.
(Prevent-a-mite and Lice spray have KILLED and caused Nero issues in animals.... in a few friends collections). Stay away from that stuff. If you know exactly how much to use.....O.K. But, I don't like spraying MY animals with that crap.

There is also a natural "safe to eat" spray called Garden Safe. It's made for vegetables and fruit...and kills mites.
If you can eat it....I'm sure the snake will be fine. I have a friend who has been using it for years with great success....after killing some animals with lice spray and prevent a mite.

Cheers.

Forgot to say....you can get Garden Safe at WalMart, K Mart, Target, etc....
Cheers,

It IS important to let the spray dry and keep the animals out of the cage until the surface is dry. I lost 2 baby Womas by putting them in while the surface was wet. Small surface areas (like rack systems) needs to be ventilated before bringing the animals back in.

Beyond that, the WalMart stuff works great.
